A 34 year Babita of Gaziabad on 10th February suffering from severe headache and fatigue who then treated at Paras Hospital , Gurgaon where she declared Brain stem death on 12thFebruary. Rajeev Makhuri, Senior Organ Transplant Coordinator, Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO), AIIMS received a call from patients relative and discussed about the possibilities for organ donation.
After further discussion with the AIIMS Director Dr.M.C.Misra circulate details of deceased to all stakeholders. On 12th the trauma team of AIIMS reached Paras Hospital for shifting the donor to AIIMS said Rajeev Maikhuri.
At evening around 7.30 the donor shifted to trauma centre ICU where a brain death committee conducted two tests at 8pm and later at 2.30 in night. Completing evaluation of donor from the Surgery, Nephrology, GI surgery the Donor shifted to OT for Retrieval at 3:30 am finished around 8:00am. After organ harvested the deceased shifted to mortuary and then handed over to family at 9 in morning.
The kidneys transplanted by Dr.Subodh Kumar, renal transplant surgeon, and Dr.V.K.Bansal of AIIMS into 54 year and 51 year men who belong to Delhi.
One of the kidneys was transplanted to Babita’s husband who was on dialysis and registered at AIIMS. As they have same blood group B+ve
The Liver of was allocated to Army hospital and transplanted to 51year old man by Dr.Chandra Rao.
During the Cadaver organ donation many challenges are came out as the family was not ready to donate all organs except kidneys but after continuous counseling and follow up with the relative of deceased they agreed for the organ donation.
There were around 300 medicos and para-medicos involved in the process as mentioned by Mr.Maikhuri.
