Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj underwent Renal Replacement Therapy (Kidney Transplant Operation) at All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, New Delhi on Saturday.
The kidney transplant at AIIMS, with the organ being harvested from a living unrelated donor aged 40.
According to Prof.Misra, Director at AIIMS “The surgery started at around 9.30 am and ended at 2.30pm following which the minister has been shifted to the ICU. First, the organ was harvested from the donor which took one-and-half hours and then it was transplanted,”
A dedicated team of 50 personnel were involved, comprised of transplant. Prof.M.Minz from PGIMER Chandigarh and Prof.V.K.Bansal led the team of Surgeons, Transplant Anaesthesiologists team lead by Prof. M K Arora, Prof. Rashmi Ramchandran, Prof. Vimmi Rewari and Dr. Preet Mohinder Singh.
For this most crucial renal transplant the staff members of nurses and technicians and other support staff, who undertook the procedure under the leadership of Prof MC Misra, Director AIIMS and Dean and HOD Cardiac Anaesthesia, AIIMS.
According to AIIMS officials the operations on Minister Sushma Swaraj and both the voluntary Kidney Donors were smooth and uneventful. Both the patients have recovered from general anaesthesia and shifted to Intensive Care Unit in the cardiothoracic Centre for close monitoring of their postoperative recovery.

Earlier on November 16 Sushma Swaraj, tweeted about her health saying she was in AIIMS due to kidney faliure. Minister was admitted to AIIMS on November 7 and was undergoing dialysis thrice a week.”
“Swaraj,64, has been suffering from diabetes for quite a long time. After the kidney failure diagnosis, she was put on maintenance dialysis.
