Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital has started hemodialysis for children for free. This facility initiated by the pediatric department of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung hospital on Tuesday.
It was inaugurated by Medical Superintendent Dr(Prof) B L Sherwal .With this initiative, Safdarjung Hospital has become second Central Government Hospital to provide Hemodialysis facility for children in North India after All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
While inaugrating Dr.Sherwal stated that “Kidney failure is not uncommon in children. There are large number of deaths because of Acute Kidney Failure many of which are treatable. Chronic Kidney Failure also comprises of around 10 % of all out patient attendance which makes a large number and most of them require hemodialysis in period awaiting Transplant. The patients of Safdarjung hospital referred to other hospitals but the department has been witnessing at least two or three patients needing peritoneal dialysis (a treatment for kidney failure that uses the lining of abdomen, or belly, to filter blood) daily because of acute kidney failure.
Further he mentioned currently, there is large gap between demand and available services. This will be a noteworthy facility for children with Kidney Failure who come from Delhi as well as remote areas of surrounding states. This will give them a new lease of life.
