The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) celebrated 62nd Foundation Day in New Delhi on Thursday.
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family welfare and Chemical & Fertilizers was the Chief Guest for the “Foundation day Function” of NAMS. Speaking at the event Mandaviya says “associations are important in leading our country.He emphasized research and innovation in medical sciences. In his opinion only those will excel who would practice research and innovation. India has a long history of the leading world in the past. India should become adviser in policy matters for the world. We should build capacity and India should have its own policy. This will develop self-confidence among Indians he added further. He highlighted that Indian traditional medicine should be combined with modern medicine. Indians should feel proud about our 5000 years old legacy.
Dr. Rajiv Kumar Vice-Chairman Planning Commission expressed the desire the need to bring together all academics and association for achieving higher levels of academic and ethics. He advocated the adoption of regulatory and ethical practices. Further he emphasized public-private partnership in medical research and wished that NAMS should organize NAMS- Industry meet. He emphasized the initiation of collaboration among medical institutions and across discipline (such as AYUSH & Medical Sciences). He said that India should invest in research on gut microbiota which shapes our physiology and psychology.
Dr S K Sarin, the President National Academy of Medical Sciences, deliberated on the achievements and future vision of the Academy. The Theme of the meeting was ‘convergence’ and it was exemplified by the participation of various associations and academic bodies, to achieve the common goals of health care delivery and converging the various medical sciences for better achievements for Medical Sciences in terms of research and developments. Informed about 6 Indian Academies & 18 Associations, which were represented today in house. He opined that they all should focus on creating a collaboration for better research, teaching and health care developments. He informed that we have 941 Fellows, 2322 honourable Members, and 7746 Members.
The NAMS accomplishes the process of encouragement and honour that should be given to the talented physicians and scientists among medical fraternity. NAMS is playing a great role in this direction by awarding fellowships to them. Till now 1000 fellows have been awarded Fellow of Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS, called “Fellows”) and several thousand as MAMS. They are being awarded in a convocation program organized in different institutions of the country time to time. Every fellow feels proud to attend and receive the scroll in this program. NAMS also encourages physicians and scientists by giving 15 oration awards and 8 Awards to the persons contributing significantly in their field. The NAMS is planning to change with time and improve its contributions as envisioned by Dr. S K Sarin, the President NAMS. He proposed the concept “NAMS vision 2030”. He is working on a future plan to improve its visibility and services through digitization of the system, so that, the accessibility of the NAMS services may be improved and one can participate in its activity easily while sitting in any part of India and abroad.
