Thousands of doctors, medical students across the country staged a protest against the government’s permission to Ayurvedic doctors to perform surgery. The demonstration took place in government and private hospitals pan India on Tuesday.

The demonstration led by the Indian Medical Association, calling it ‘mixopathy’, the IMA has also threatened to withdraw all non-essential, non-Covid services in hospitals on 11 December.

Dr Rajan Sharma, President Indian Medical Association led a protest outside IMA headquarters and followed all COVID guidelines from wearing masks to maintain social distancing. Medical students also protest in-front of National Medical Commission (NMC) in Dwarka.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Resident Doctors Association had organised a protest from 12 – 2 pm at Gate 1. Dr Adarsh Pratap Singh, President of AIIMS RDA said, we wish that ancient medicine of India flourishes and advances further in its purest form, on the other hand, we clearly are against the mixing of streams of medicine since it poses a hazardous risk to the health of the innocent, general population which may be irreversible and fatal. Around 100 residents from AIIMS, other medical staff and IMA members took part in a symbolic protest Dr.Singh added.

Commenting on the subject Dr.Amrinder Malhi Assistant Professor AIIMS, Department of Cardiovascular Radiology & Endovascular Interventions, AIIMS, New Delhi said “Modern medicine is not against any other AYUSH practices, but patient care we provide is different from them. Every branch of medicine has its importance, but ‘Mixopathy’ is not the right way to improve our health care system Dr.Malhi added.

Supporting the protest against the notification of Central Council of Indian Medicine Dr.Shivaji Dev Burman- President Federation for Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) said “ We strongly oppose the decision of intermixing of ancient & historical Indian system of Medicine with modern Evidence-based Medicine that will lead to the creation of a Hybrid system. It will affect the Indian system of medicine and the standard of patientcare.

Mixing of traditional and modern medicine will be harmful for the patients and this will also increase the burden on the health care system. Both the practitioner either Allopathy or Ayurvedic perfom their task according to the principles and disciplines  which can be destructive and devastating  through this Mixopathy said Dr.Pankaj Solanki, Chairman Dharmveer Solanki hospital and past president FORDA

RDA AIIMS sent a submission to Union Health Minister Dr.Harshvardhan for the Immediate withdrawal of gazette notification of Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) regarding mixopathy and crosspathy in healthcare. Earlier in the month of November FORDA have also written to Chairman of National Medical Commission on the subject.
