The Union Health Ministry said that an isolated case of MonkeyPox has been reported in India, which is not part of the health emergency declared by the World Health Organization. Laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of Mpox virus of the West African clade 2 in the patient. This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding clade 1 of mpox. The patient was admitted to the designated hospital yesterday as a suspect. His sample was sent for testing, where it has now been confirmed that he has been found positive for MPox.
The Health Ministry had informed yesterday on September 8 that a suspected case of monkeypox has been found in a young man. This young man had recently returned from a country where monkeypox is spreading rapidly. In a statement released yesterday ministry had said that the condition of the patient is stable and had informed about isolating the patient in the hospital designated for this.
No need to panic, Union Health Ministry
The matter is being handled as per the existing protocol and based on the report of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) of India, the Ministry said that there is no need to panic. The ministry had said that contact tracing of the patient is being done, so that any possible spread of infection can be prevented.
What are the symptoms of mpox?
Some common symptoms of MPOX include fever, chills, swollen glands, fatigue, muscle and back pain, headache, and respiratory symptoms (such as sore throat, blocked nose, or cough). The Health Ministry has advised people not to ignore these symptoms and immediately visit a doctor if have such symptoms.
