Ankur an 18 year old boy met with an accident and doctors diagnosed him with posterior cruciate ligament avulsion fracture of knee due to which he was not able to walk and lost hope to stand again on his knee but, the surgery performed by Safdurjung doctors made it possible.
A team of orthopaedic surgeons led by Dr. Balvinder Singh, Assistant Professor, Dr. Taha Ahmed and Dr. Mohit Garg, senior residents, Dr. Ashu Meena, anaesthetists Dr. Rajni and Dr. Santosh, assisted by sister Aruna undertook this procedure using a novel technique.
While talking with Healthlive Dr.Balwinder said “We used Arthroscopic suture bridging technique which does not require any implant like screws or endo-button hence bringing down the cost by 70-80%.” Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures are a type of avulsion fracture of the knee that represent the most common isolated PCL lesion. This typically involves separation.
This procedure has recently been adopted in Germany and the Unites States, and rarely performed in India Dr.Singh added.
Doctors prefer medical implants, screws, rods and plates mostly for complex orthopaedic surgeries. But for the first time, a team of orthopaedic surgeons here have conducted a surgery told Dr.Balvinder with a smile of success in his face.
In our country there are thousands of cases like Ankur who cannot afford the high cost of surgery but such new methods which is affordable and minimizes the financial burden, can give them a new hope of life” said Dr Balivinder Singh, Assistant Professor at the Hospital.
Government should encourage such new techniques of surgery in which there was no blood loss, rare chance of infection , performed by only 5mm hole and with minimal cost which is also a ray of hope for such patients who cannot afford high cost surgeries as told Dr.Balvinder to HL.
