Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the names of doctors recommended for the highest civilian honour i.e.Padma awards for this year.

Kejriwal on Saturday addressing the media through digital briefing shared the names of ILBS director Dr SK Sarin, Lok Nayak Hospital medical director Dr Suresh Kumar and Max Healthcare clinical director (internal medicine) Dr Sandeep Budhiraja which the Delhi government sent to the Centre government.

Further, Kejriwal said it was difficult task to choose the three “Corona warriors”amongfrom a list of 740 names suggested by 9,427 people. These three names will be forwarded to the Centre. These three doctors will, in a way, represent all the doctors and paramedics of Delhi.

The recommendations are in line with Kejriwal’s announcement on July 27 that the Delhi government will nominate only doctors and healthcare workers this year for the Padma awards — Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan — this year. A committee led by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, and consisting of Chief Secretary Vijay Dev and Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar as members, screened 740 names sent by the public and shortlisted the three doctors for the awards.

Dr SK Sarin is the Vice Chancellor of ILBS. He established India’s first plasma bank, which operated 24 hours a day and donated over 8,000 plasma units. Dr Sarin also opened the Delhi government’s first RT-PCR testing facility and genome sequencing lab.

Dr Suresh Kumar is the Medical Director of Lok Nayak (LNJP) Hospital, where the highest number of Covid-19 patients in the country received treatment under his supervision. He established the country’s second plasma bank. Dr Suresh Kumar launched a video-conference facility to enable Covid patients admitted to the hospital to stay in touch with their families. He played an instrumental role in setting up a dedicated labour room for pregnant women who were Covid-positive. Owing to this, more than 627 deliveries, including 266 successful caesarean-sections, were performed at LNJP Hospital.

Dr Sandeep Budhiraja is the Group Medical Director of Max Healthcare group and started the country’s first plasma treatment.

Kejriwal explained why we have chosen these doctors who worked tirelessly like our other healthcare workers. Delhi government always remember and salutes the hard work of healthcare workers during the pandemic.
