Delhi’s Gangaram hospital has given new life to a 34-year-old man who was suffering from black fungus after recovering from the coronavirus by removing a kidney and part of a lung. This complex surgery was done by three departments Urology, Chest Medicine and ENT of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

The hospital claimed on Monday that this case of mucormycosis (Black Fungus) after Kovid infection is the first of its kind in the world. And it is being published in the medical journal. In this, the kidney, lungs and sinus were affected.

The hospital said in a statement that the patient, a resident of Ghaziabad, was brought to the hospital due to complications of post-covid. According to the statement, the patient had a respiratory problem. Also, there was a high fever and there was blood in the sputum. He told that Mucor (a type of fungus) had not only penetrated to the patient’s nasal cavity and it had also affected the left lung and right kidney. The statement said that part of the lung and kidney were badly damaged and Mucor was expected to spread further. so infected with mucor.

According to Dr. Ujjwal Parakh, Senior Consultant, Department of Chest Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, We recently received and saved a complicated case of Mucormycosis. The patient Ranjeet Kumar Singh was 34 years old from Ghaziabad and now he was discharged back to home.

Three team of doctors were involved, which included Dr. Sabyasachi Bal, a Thoracic Surgeon who removed infected lung, Dr. Manu Gupta a Senior Urologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital who removed the complete right kidney and Dr Varun Rai,  Consultant, Department of ENT who did sinus surgery and debridement of mucor from the nasal area.

It was noted that the disease mucormycosis or black fungus occurs in people who have low immunity due to covid-19, diabetes, kidney, and diseases related to liver and heart. The hospital said Mucor was suspected to have damaged other organs, so a portion of the left lung and the entire right kidney were removed immediately.

Dr. Manu Gupta, Consultant, Department of Urology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told that the surgery was complicated and lasted for six hours. He told that due to the fungus, sinus surgery was also done. This case is being reported in medical literature as the first case in the world after Covid infection added Dr.Gupta

Dr.Ujjwal further add that the patient’s life was saved and he was given 45 days of treatment.
