Ekta Purohit/ Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda and Chief Minister of Haryana Manoharlal Khattar performed the bhumi puja for the building of Hospital Block of National Cancer Institute of AIIMS, New Delhi.
While addressing the gathering at the ceremony in Jhajjar’s village Badhsa, Haryana Nadda thanked the Haryana Government for providing the 300 acres of land to AIIMS, New Delhi for expanding its facilities in the region. As we are aware, cancer is a major public health concern in world. According to WHO, Cancer is leading cause of death worldwide. There are approximately 30 lakh cases of cancer in India detected out of which 6 lakh patients die each year while about 11 lakh new cases occur every year. To prevent, treat and cure this hazardous cancer disease, the government had decided to set up new institutes of advance research activities.
The National Cancer Institute will be independent India’s largest Government funded hospital project. This institute will be modeled after the National Cancer Institute of USA and the Government of India had a MoU with NCI USA during the visit of our PM Narendra Modi in October 2014.
Further he said that the work of this institute will be completed in 27 months with a cost of over Rs 2035 crores. It would have a facility of 710 beds out of which 200 beds will be dedicated for Translational Research in India specific cancers. There will be 372 units of flats and 1080 hostel rooms for the staff members. A capacity of 800 units for the patient attendants will also being planned. NCI will be nodal institute for all the activities related to cancer in the country and linked with all Regional Cancer Centres within the country. It will be equipped with a cutting edge technology and shall have 26 Operation Theatres,5 Linear Accelerators, 4 PET Scanners, 3 Brachy-therapy, 3 CT Scanners, 2 MRI Scanners etc.
This institute will provide employment opportunities, which includes 265 Faculty, 327 Residents and 2113 other staff etc. AIIMS has decided to immediately activate a NCI Project Cell by engaging 15 officials on contract basis at the project site. Apart from NCI, in future other centres for research and innovation in areas of Bioinformatics, Proteomics, Genomics, Stem Cell, Nano biomedicine, Drug Discovery, Infectious disease etc will be established here apart from expanding the existing facilities of AIIMS, New Delhi.
Nadda added that the Centre will set up a cancer institute at Kolkata at a cost of Rs 500 crore. Besides this, the government has prepared scheme for setting up Regional Cancer Institutes, 20 State Cancer Institutes and 50 Tertiary Cancer Centres all over the country. In addition, the process for setting up 10 new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been started.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that the government would recommend to the construction of a four-lane road from Badhsa AIIMS to the Delhi Airport. The CM urged Nadda to sanction a medical college for Manethi in Rewari district and pace up the work to accord approval for establishment of a cardiac centre and sports and fitness science centre in AIIMS.
Dr.Rath , Chief, Dr.B.R.A Institute-Rotary Cancer Hospital, AIIMS said, this institute will have more facilities for the patients and their attendants. There will be accommodation facilities which will be made by the support of Infosys.
