All India Institute of Medical Sciences soon launch a helpline for the heart patients to counsel them.
The helpline will be run by group of four nurses who are currently being trained to counsel the patients said Dr.Sandeep Seth, Professor at Department of Cardiology, AIIMS .
Further Dr. Sandeep said this is the simplest model in a minimum cost and depending on its success, this model would gradually be expanded to other central hospitals too.
“We are training a group of nurses in imparting counselling and education regarding heart ailments to those patients who have been treated at AIIMS. At any point of time, four nurses will be taking calls from these people and guide them accordingly.
“We have purchased simple handsets and pre-paid SIM cards, and the numbers would together become the helpline. This facility will be available from 9am to 5pm on Monday to Friday and for Saturdays Sundays it is for half day said Dr Sandeep Seth.
This helpline will be very helpful to those patients who belongs to different places and not able to come AIIMS said Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at AIIMS Dr.Balram Airan.
The Four trained nurses on duty will be handling the calls and it begin with, a limited number of patients by providing the number, so that the calls are manageable,” Dr.Airan added.
Heart failure is one of the major problems in the country with an estimated burden of about one crore or nearly one per cent of the population. It is a condition in which the heart cannot pump blood around the body effectively and properly. Heart attack, hypertension and obesity are some of the major causes for the condition.
