AIIMS hosted its first Indo-US Conference on Translational Research in Cancer on Tuesday to enhance cooperation on Cancer Research, Prevention, Control and Management.
The one day workshop discussed the issues of organizing a Cancer Research Institute and the Prevention & Control of India centric cancer such as Cervical Cancer. The conference inaugurated by Prof.M.C.Misra, Director AIIMS.
Speaking at the event Dr. Edward Trimble Director, Center for Global Health, NCI (NIH), from US told HealthLive “we are happy to be a part of such programme, it would be beneficial for the scientists of both the countries.”
Further he told we together work and it would be more successful in translational cancer research.
Dr. Susan Shurin, Senior Advisor to Center for Global Health(NIH) said, by this we try to found out most significantly problems related to cancer.
While speaking with Healthlive Prof G.K.Rath, Head, National Cancer Institute (NCI) said it is a programme in collaboration with AIIMS, DBT and ICMR for the National Cancer Institute on translational cancer research which is established in jhajjar,Haryana.
He further elaborates translational means researcher and clinical work together for research in cancer. There were more and more cases of cancer increasing day by day in our country so, to detect the main causes there is need of proper research. This initiative would be a step ahead in detection of cancer Dr.Rath added.
Dr.Preetha Rajaraman, Program Director for South Asia in the NCI (NIH)., AIIMS, Prof Sonia Nityanand SGPGI, Lucknow, Prof Neerja Bhatla of AIIMS and Prof Nitin Nagarkar, Director AIIMS Raipur. Over 100 delegates have been attended the Conference including scientists from the Department of Biotechnology, NICPR, ICMR, Benaras Hindu University and National Center for Cell Sciences, Pune, as well as eminent scientists from AIIMS.
The 1st Indo-US Joint Conference on Translational Research in Cancer represented a significant milestone in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries on June 25, 2015.
India is establishing the NCI at AIIMS Jhajjar campus, which is the largest public health care investment in Independent India’s history with a cost of Rs. 2035 crores. Civil works on the National Cancer Institute are expected to be completed by March 2018.
The Institute will be first of its kind and will be awarding MD-PhD degree in high level cancer research programs.
