Protests are taking place in Kolkata over the brutality and murder case of a trainee doctor. Hospitals across the country went on strike regarding this, in this regard Delhi’s hospitals also went on strike. This case was also heard in the Supreme Court today in which the court requested the doctors to go back to work. After 11 days of strike residents doctors of national capital Delhi, has decided to call off the strike, while they will continue the protest after duty hours in the soladitary of Kolkata incident. HealthLive spoke to leaders of RDA from AIIMS, RML, Safdajung, Indiragandhi and LHMC hospitals on this move, sharing their thoughts here:
Resident Doctors Association (RDA) said in a statement that after the Supreme Court’s appeal in the RG Kar medical college incident and the assurance of doctors’ safety, we are returning to work again. Resident doctors thanked the Supreme Court for taking cognizance of the Kolkata rape case and drawing attention to the issue of safety of healthcare workers across the country.
Dr.Indra Shekhar Prasad, President, RDA AIIMs Hospital-We are resuming duties following the Supreme Court’s appeal and assurances. We commend the Court for taking decisive action, particularly in addressing the RG Kar Medical College incident and the broader safety and security concerns of healthcare workers nationwide. Our commitment to patient care remains unwavering, and we urge strict adherence to the Court’s directives. Our fight and struggle will continue through symbolic protest till Justice served and implementation of guidelines for safety and security measures.
Dr.Adil Amin,General Secretary, RDA, Ram Manohar Lohia, Hospital: We are calling off strike and all the services will resume by our doctors. We have reach consensus as Supreme Court asking us to join the duty. They are seeing our issue, they illustrate minute-to-minute concerns and our problems like rest room to wash room. So, we have faith and hope in Indian judiciary and the case of deceased doctor is sent to CBI as well. We hope for best output from the same. We will follow the case both from Supreme court and CBI. We will have protest in solidarity, without strike. We will checkout all developments. I wish and hope that such incident should not happened again with any of medical professionals or anybody else in our country. We as a doctors are always concerned about our patients, and will serve them for their betterment.
Dr.Sandeep Dagar, President, RDA-Indira Gandhi Hospital, Dwarka: We have decided to end our strike in response to hon’ble Supreme Court, we are grateful to the supreme court for recognizing the seriousness of the issue,and taking steps to protect health care workers across the country.the establishment of NTA to address these safety concerns is crucial steps foreward.we appreciate court assurance that no actions will be taken against protesting doctors. While we return to duties our commitment to patientcare remains strong. However, are fight for the safety and rights for healthcare workers is not over, we will continue to advocate for the issue through symbolic protest after duty hours, until the necessary safety measures are being fully implemented. We stand united in our mission to insure safe n secure environment for all healthcare workers.
Dr.Sarda Prasad Sahoo, President RDA LHMC Hospital: After the Sou motu action taken by Hon’ble Supreme Court in Kolkata incident, apart court recognized the plight of problems faced by healthcare professionals and requested to resume the services, therefore having trust and faith in our country’s judiciary, we decided to called off the strike. The support of our administration was instrumental and we thanked them for standing beside us for the cause. We requ est and hope that no absences will be record and nor any salary deducted for the period of our strike, we ensre our services for the patientcare.
Dr.Bharani Kumar B, President RDA Safdarjung Hospital: The recent developments in RG kar medical college incident , that Hon’ble Supreme Court has addressed the concerns of healthcare workers, specially women doctors at national level by constituting National Task Force. The task force has been asked to present the interim report in three weeks and and final reports in two months. Considering all these actions we have decided to suspend our strike till further notice. However, we still stand with RG Kar medical college and will continue symbolic peaceful protest. We will conduct peaceful march once every week. Apart, we thank our hospital administration who stood with us during protest and request them to not take any action against the protesting residents. We residents are always committed towards the patientcare.
