9th Convocation Day celebrated at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences

In a momentous ceremony, the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) held its 9th Convocation Day, marking a significant milestone for India’s first dedicated liver university.

The event was graced by the presence of Her Excellency Shrimati Draupadi Murmu, Honorable President of India, who inaugurated the ceremony. Also in attendance were Shri Vinay Saxena, Honorable LG of Delhi, Shri Naresh Kumar, Chief Secretary of Delhi, along with other distinguished officials and dignitaries.

EIGHTH BATCH GRADUATES FROM INDIA’S FIRST LIVER UNIVERSITY:

A total of 65 graduating students received degrees across various programs, including 13 in specialized DM, MCh, and PhD courses, and 27 in post-doctoral fellowships. Dr. Shiv Sarin, Director of ILBS, presented the institute’s annual report, showcasing its achievements and unwavering commitment to medical education, training, and capacity building in the field of liver care.

ILBS Established India as an International Healthcare Hub:

President Murmu commended ILBS on reaching this important milestone and lauded its exceptional contributions to healthcare. She congratulated the graduating students, urging them to remain steadfast in their dedication to serving the institute, society, and ultimately, humanity. She expressed delight in the fact that 37 out of the total 65 graduating students were women, signaling the growing share of women in the country’s elite workforce. 

She lauded ILBS for establishing India as an international healthcare hub by providing world class treatment facilities at an affordable cost. She praised the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Lab in the institute and iterated her expectation that ILBS would lead from the front in medical research. 

She called liver the security guard of the body since a healthy and active liver stops diseases like diabetes, heart disease etc from entering the body. She said that the country has high expectation from ILBS in the field of liver disease prevention. 

Speaking on organ donation, the Hon’ble President said that the country needs large scale efforts to encourage organ donation among its citizens. She also urged ILBS to organize more and more awareness programs to encourage organ donation. The Hon’ble President also inked her initials on a sign board meant for pledging support to the cause of organ donation lending her voice and support to this vital public health issue in the country and the world. 

The ceremony also saw the conferment of Honorary Doctorate of Science degrees upon esteemed individuals: Dr. Samiran Nandy, President of AIIMS Rishikesh, Padma Shri Dr. Prakash Muralidhar Amte, and Padma Bhushan Shri Devendra Raj Mehta.

Expressing his profound gratitude to the entire team at ILBS, Dr. S.K. Sarin emphasized the collaborative spirit that has made the institute’s success possible. He extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates while offering valuable advice, encouraging them to learn from their mistakes rather than conceal them. Furthermore, he proudly announced the remarkable achievement of completing 1,000 liver transplants since its inception in the month of December, a testament to ILBS’s dedication to excellence in patient care.

The 9th Convocation Day marked a joyous celebration of academic achievement, institutional progress, and unwavering commitment to serving the field of liver healthcare.
