In a move aimed at enhancing the accessibility and convenience of transportation within the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) campus, several electric vehicles that were previously underutilized in the Central Transport Facility have found a new purpose. Dr. Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS, New Delhi, has taken note of this underutilization and responded with a plan that not only optimizes resource usage but also benefits the community within the AIIMS campus.
Serving promptly the needs of patients: The swift implementation of this decision, within just 24 hours, showcases AIIMS’s dedication to responding promptly to the needs of its patients. Additionally, the allocation of these vehicles for the Mother & Child Block is made possible through the support of CSR-ICICI Foundation and will serve females, driven by female drivers, further promoting inclusivity and safety.
The Central Transport Facility at AIIMS, New Delhi, houses a fleet of electric vehicles that, due to a shortage of drivers, were not being used to their full potential. Recognizing the need for these vehicles to serve a greater purpose, Dr. Prof. M. Srinivas, during his recent rounds, made a significant decision.
In a move that prioritizes the convenience and mobility of AIIMS patients, faculty, staff, and residents, it has been decided that these underutilized electric vehicles will be allocated to the Mother & Child Block within the campus. This strategic decision will facilitate internal transportation needs for patients and those working in the Mother & Child Block, improving accessibility and efficiency within the sprawling AIIMS complex.
Who will take Responsibility? Dr. Biswaroop Chakrabarty, Additional Professor of Pediatrics, will assume the responsibility of overseeing the allocation and operationalization of these electric vehicles within the Mother & Child Block. The vehicles will be available for use 24×7, currently 15 such vehicles are in operation and soon 15 more vehicles will be added, ensuring round-the-clock convenience for the AIIMS community. To operate these vehicles, multi-tasking staff with valid driving licenses and other volunteers, preferably female, with valid driving licenses will be engaged.
“This transformative initiative not only optimizes the use of electric vehicles but also embodies AIIMS, New Delhi’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art healthcare services while enhancing the quality of life, improving the environment, offering state-of-the-art patient services, and reducing the carbon footprint for its community members,” said Dr. Rima Dada.
It’s noteworthy that while the Central Transport will continue to be the custodian of these vehicles, handling tasks such as inventory management, maintenance, and charging infrastructure, the vehicles will serve an exclusive purpose within the Mother & Child Block. This initiative is aimed at streamlining the availability of electric vehicles for a specific section of AIIMS while maximizing their utility.
