Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital a central government run hospital has achieved a great success. In fact, on Thursday, a successful kidney transplant was done by robot in the hospital. Safgarjung hospital has become the first government hospital in the country to do this, where kidney transplant has been done with the help of robot. Earlier in hospital the kidney was removed with the help of a robot in the hospital, but on this was the first time when kidney was transplanted into another patient’s body with the help of a robot.

The first robotic renal transplant of Indian central government and government hospital was performed successfully by team of doctors of various departments including Prof.Anup Kumar ,Head of Department,Department of Urology ,Robotics and Renal Transplant, the nephrology team led by Dr Himanshu Verma,Head of Department of  Nephrology, the Anesthesia team led by Dr Madhu Dayal .This was made possible by all administrative support of Medical superintendent SJH and VMMC Prof (Dr)BL Sherwal.

Patient was suffering from kidney problem since 5 years

It is being told by Dr.Anup Kumar that the patient who has been transplanted kidney. He is completely healthy now. The patient can also be discharged from the hospital soon. The name of the patient who has undergone kidney transplant is Mukesh. He was suffering from kidney problem for the last 5 years and had come to Safdarjung Hospital from Farrukabad in Uttar Pradesh about three months back. In view of Mukesh’s problem and was waiting for Renal transplant for many years while on dialysis .He did not have money to get transplant done from a private centre . The donor of kidney was wife of Mukesh the recipient and donor are doing excellent in post-surgery. Dr Anup kumar told that Robotic renal transplant is the most technically challenging surgery in Urology .It required excellent expertise in Robotics as well as Renal Transplant surgery  so our team of doctors proved and performed the same.

Faster recovery with robotic transplant

While talking about kidney transplant Dr. Sherwal of the hospital says that doing so will prove to be a milestone in the country. He said that with robotic implants, the patient’s recovery is quick. Apart from this, Dr. Himanshu Verma told that this was the 100th kidney transplant in Safdarjung and now his team is doing kidney transplant every week and it has becoming successful continuously. Currently, very few hospital in the India are able to perform such robotic surgeries and that too it is done mostly in private hospitals, Dr Verma added.
