To observe the 12th National Plastic Surgery Day plastic surgeons from across the country will make people aware of plastic surgery by showing films at AIIMS on Friday. This information was given by the Association of Plastics Surgeons of India (APSI) in AIIMS. The name of the Film festival is ‘APSI Sushruta-plastic & reconstructive film festival.

Dr.Ravi Mahajan, Director Association of Plastic Surgeons, said we are organising this film festival to create awareness on plastic surgeries. He said plastic surgery includes surgeries of burns, trauma, infection, amputations to cancer surgeries etc. Due to plastic surgeries, the life of people transformed Dr.Mahajan added.

Dr. Maneesh Singhal, Head of the Department of Plastic Reconstructive and Burn Surgery, AIIMS said “Sushruta was the Janak (creator) of plastic surgery. He emphasised that plastic surgery does not mean only cosmetic surgery, but due to lack of awareness, more than 60 per cent of people consider plastic surgery to be cosmetic surgery. Talking about first of its kind film festival based on the real stories of patients Dr.Singhal said we, are happy to share how the lives of people get changed due to plastic surgeries. We received around 120 film entries from all over India. With help of the Indian Institute of Film Technology Pune, we selected 25 movies to be screened on the 15th July occasion of the World Plastic Surgery Day and 12th National Plastic Day.

Further Dr. Singhal added around 6,000 plastic surgeries are performed in AIIMS per year. Our job is not just to show beauty by making changes to the skin or tissues. We provide full length and breadth of plastic surgery, right from burn to burn reconstruction, trauma, and congenital cleft lip. At AIIMS we see around 100 patients per day and we do around 16 surgeries per day. Dr.Singhal said that plastic surgeons are doing the work of saving lives through plastic surgery every day in various hospitals of the country including AIIMS, but people are not aware about plastic surgery. He shared that Trauma surgery is the most challenging of all plastic surgeries because when patients came in the early morning at 2 am at that time recollecting staff and doing other preparations for surgery took time, but we have to save the lives of patients at any cost. We make sure that every emergency patient who requires plastic surgery may get admission on time at AIIMS.

In AIIMS we have a team of 8 plastic surgeons, we do around 16 surgeries per day and almost 50 per cent of them are trauma cases.

Plastic surgery has various aspects as involved in head injuries to bone injuries. In India there are around 2,500 plastic surgeons and each surgeon may do 4 surgeries per day says Dr.Vijay Kumar, Honorary Secretary APSI.
