Although the government assured to provide adequate security measures in state-run hospitals, resident doctors there continue to bear the brunt of violent attendants of patients.
The doctors at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) hospital in West Delhi went on strike today demanding action alleging the attendants of a patient allegedly beat up three of them.
The representatives of the Resident Doctors’ Association met senior officials in the state health department and demanded security facilities at the hospital.
Dr.Sumit, RDA president at DDU Hospital said, Hospital must provide security to us and it is tough to work in such atmosphere.
Dr Balvinder Singh, member of the Governing Council of Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of Delhi, told Health Live it is a matter of our safety and security.
There is one or two cases of abuse and beating up of doctors are reported every day in government hospitals. “There is no system for the institutions to file FIRs against the accused in such cases,” Singh said. “In fact, doctors, particularly women, try to avoid legal hassles, thus leading to skewed data about these sorts of attacks.”
According to hospital sources, a scuffle broke out between doctors and patient and his attendants at the Orthopedic emergency in the hospital yesterday at around 10 pm following both parties have filed a complaint against each other with Police.
However, the patient’s relative alleged that the doctor hit the patient leading to damage of the patient’s ear drum, who had gone for the treatment of his fractured leg.
Due to the fractured leg the patient was sitting on the floor, with his leg stretched. “As he was in pain, an orthopedic doctor passing by his side had hit his leg. The boy had just asked him to watch forward and then walk. As soon as he, said this, that man started hitting my son so badly that caused damage to his ear drum.”
Hospital authorities said that a four member committee has been constituted to enquire into the matter and submit a report.
On Monday, the medical services in the hospital were halted due to which many patients had to suffer a lot. Meanwhile, all throughout the day, the patient’s family protest outside the hospital for the action to be taken against a doctor.
