A delegation of AIIMS Resident Doctors Association, Student Union, and Society of Young Scientists (SYS) met with Union Minister for Urban Development Venkahaih Naidu and requested him to consider the issues of accommodation for resident students.
The group of doctors also urged minister to reconsider the government’s decision to sell 10 per cent of institution land to NBCC construction of flats for AIIMS staff and try to expedite the hostels for students and doctors.
On letter submission to Minister Dr.Vijay Gurjar, RDA ,President AIIMS told HealthLive “being the apex Institute AIIMS Delhi students and residents satisfaction should be on first priority of the government but somehow government of India is focused on opening new AIIMS in every state (an appericiable step) but demonizing the mother AIIMS whose brand value they are looking to cash out”.
If government provide accommodation to resident doctors close to AIIMS then it may be encouraging step for such doctors who are not joining AIIMS due to of non-availability of hostels told Harijit Singh Bhatti, General Secretary , RDA,AIIMS.
It should be on priority to provide hostel accommodation to all residents because the duty hours of resident doctors are not defined or limited and it would be better if they can be accommodated near the hospital he added.
They further stated that AIIMS does not have an advanced Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF), which is the back-bone to conduct the advanced basic as well as applied medical research in the various areas of medical sciences.
“When strength of UG (undergraduate) MBBS was increased from 50 to 77, a lot of fund was given to AIIMS but the number of rooms did not increase proportionately,” they claimed in the letter. In addition to the shortage of rooms is the “collapsing” of roofs and walls of the hostel buildings which has occurred five times in past five months.
“Such sudden collapses can be life threatening and If such collapses continued then what surety of safety about newly constructed part of ladies hostel?? they questioned in the letter submitted.
We have heard about the plan to increase UG-MBBS seats to 100. We appreciate the sincerity and commitment of Union government to health sector in the country. AIIMS Delhi has not having enough seats in lecture theaters for 77 students and how AIIMS administration even think to increase seats to 100.
The delegation also urged Naidu to look into the matter of AIIMS administration issuing notices to some resident doctors, asking them why their services should not be terminated for participating in a protest which almost disrupted an MoU signing event attended by two Union Ministers on January 17.
“Instead of listening to our demands, AIIMS administration is taking strict action against us by giving termination threats they added.
The Hon’ble Minister gave us a positive reaction and said he will look into this matter and further discuss it with Health Minister said Dr.Gurjar .
The same letter is also sent to the office of Union Health Minister J.P.Nadda he added.
Earlier the FAIIMS (faculty association of AIIMS) also opposes this move of the government to sell 10 per cent of the institutional land for commercial use to National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCC) .
