Medical Education Minister Dr.Sharan Prakash Patil warned the doctors of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) of strict action if they encourage patients to buy medicines from the market despite the hospital having sufficient stock of all essential drugs.
Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil said the hospital has procured all essential drugs and patients need not buy them from the market, after he visited to the wards and works at KIMS.
Doctors have been told to prescribe only those medicines which are available in KIMS, he added.
Patients and their attendees must inform the hospital director or medical superintendent if they have been asked to buy medicines from the market, Patil said.
The minister assured that advanced cobalt tele therapy unit Bhabhatron-II will soon be set up at the old room of Radiotherapy to treat cancer patients. At present, KIMS has the advanced LINAC machine to treat cancer. Bhabhatron-II will be used as a standby in case LINAC machine develops any technical snag.
Patil said an application has been sent to the Medical Council of India to increase the number of MBBS seats in the hospital, from the present 150 to 200.
When asked about the delay in various development works at KIMS, Patil said construction of a super speciality hospital is on in full swing and work on the cardiology unit, mother and child care unit, administrative building and burns ward have been given a December deadline.
Warning doctors who skip duty, Patil said the guilty will be dismissed from service immediately.
The minister also asked doctors to look into the complaint of a woman from Dandeli who informed him about the scarcity of beds in wards. Her relative, who was admitted in the hospital for delivery, was forced to sleep on floor mat.
KIMS medical superintendent Dr Shivappa Anirushettru was among other senior hospital officials present during the minister’s visit.
